Thanksgiving 2022 is on November 24! Are you looking forward to having dinner with your family and friends? We've celebrated Thanksgiving since childhood, but how much do you know about Thanksgiving? Do you know its original story? Or do you just think about the feast?
Original Story
In Plymouth, Massachusetts, England, there was a group of Puritans. They were unhappy with the British Church's political repression of them as well as its religious reform. So in 1620, 102 Puritans came to America by the Mayflower ship to search for religious freedom and a better life.

However, they can hardly survive in the cold winter due to the unfamiliar environment and the lack of survival skills. But luckily, they got help from the local indigenous people(the Native Americans) and taught them how to survive, such as hunting, fishing, and planting corn.
Finally, the first Thanksgiving was on November 1621, the Pilgrims welcomed their harvest day. According to religious tradition, the Pilgrims decided to set this day as a day of thanking God, thanking themselves for safely crossing the Atlantic Ocean, thanking their bountiful crop harvest, and thanking the indigenous people for their help.

In order to hold a feast, male Puritans would go out to hunt food, like turkeys, while female Puritans would make delicious food from corn, pumpkin, and sweet potato. After the preparation, they invited 90 Native Americans to have a Thanksgiving meal. All people expressed their gratitude to God piously. They sang, danced, and enjoyed delicious turkeys by the campfire.

Thanksgiving Day is inseparable from a lady. Who is she?
Sarah Josepha Hale, an editor of Godey's Lady's Book, has persistently written hundreds of letters to governors, ministers and every American president, suggesting that the last Thursday in November be the day to pay tribute to God. At that time, the harvest Thanksgiving of Native Americans had been held for a long time, but it had never been officially stipulated as a national holiday.
In 1789, President George Washington announced that Thursday, November 26, was named "Public Thanksgiving Day". However, the date of Thanksgiving Day changed with the rotation of the president, and Thanksgiving was still not a federal holiday.
In September 1863, Ms.Hale wrote an editorial on the message of Thanksgiving and wrote a letter to President Abraham Lincoln, suggesting that he make Thanksgiving a regular federal holiday. And President Lincoln liked that idea. Later, President Abraham Lincoln issued a declaration, the last Thursday of November was designated national Thanksgiving Day. In 1941, the United States Congress officially stipulated Thanksgiving Day on the fourth Thursday of November.
In 2022, Thanksgiving is still a time to come together and give thanks for our many blessings. We celebrate Thanksgiving by gathering with family and friends, enjoying a feast of traditional foods, and expressing our gratitude for all we have. The day of Thanksgiving is a cherished American tradition that serves as a reminder of the things in life that are truly important.

Many Americans enjoy a traditional feast that includes turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, cranberry sauce, and pumpkin pie on the fourth Thursday in November. The feast is usually enjoyed with family and friends. It is an opportunity to express gratitude for all the blessings of life.

Turkey is typically served as the main course and is often roasted or baked. As we mentioned above, the Native Americans taught Pilgrims how to hunt, and wild turkeys were plentiful at that time, so they quickly became a popular food source. Pilgrims also like turkey because it is a relatively easy animal to catch and kill. Turkeys are not very fast or agile, so people on foot could easily hunt them down. Additionally, turkeys are not very intelligent, so they do not pose much of a challenge for hunters.

Stuffing is most commonly associated with Thanksgiving dinner. It is typically made with a combination of bread, celery, onions, and herbs and is often served as a side dish. Cranberry sauce is made from cranberries, sugar, water, and sometimes other fruit juices. It is usually used as a side dish or condiment, with a smooth or chunky texture.

Mashed potatoes are comfort food that people of all ages enjoy. Some people like to add cheese or sour cream to their mashed potatoes, while others like to keep them plain and simple. The key to making the perfect mashed potato is to start with starchy potatoes. These potatoes are easy to break down when cooked and create a smooth texture. When you select your potatoes, you will want to cut them into even pieces. This will help them cook evenly. Place the potatoes in a pot and boil them. Once the potatoes are done cooking, thoroughly drain them and put them back in the pot. Add some butter, milk, salt, and pepper to taste.

Pumpkin pie is a rich, and flavorful dessert often served with whipped cream or ice cream. It is made with a cooked pumpkin puree and typically has a spice mixture of cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, and cloves. The filling is placed in an unbaked or partially baked pastry shell and then baked until the filling is set.
Overall, these dishes may vary from family to family, and some families choose different countries' food for their Thanksgiving dinner. For example, a family from Mexico might have tamales and tacos, while a family from Italy might have lasagna and breadsticks. Regardless of the dishes, we should all come together on Thanksgiving to give thanks for everything we have.
